Stroke in Older Women

April 2016: Hubbard et al (2016) Stroke, physical function and death over a 15-year period in older Australian women. Stroke, 47, 1060-1067, DOI: 10:1161/STROKEAHA at

In the past three years, my colleagues and I have been investigating one of Australia’s extensive longitudinal database of long-term health outcomes in older Australian women. Our focus has been (and this will come as no surprise,) the impact of stroke over time! This final publication, one in a series of three, told us that 50% of older Australian women are living with stroke for more than 10 years, and many of them, are doing this with poor physical function! This was a surprise to us – it challenges assumptions about women in their 70s, 80s and 90s who have experienced stroke and gives this group of our community, a voice. You’ll find the abstract and “humble opinion” under Journal Club 2016.
